- Santiago Solari’s side crashed out 5-3 on aggregate after a 4-1 defeat at home
Sergio Ramos could only watch on horror as his ploy to pick up a suspension for the second-leg of Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Ajax backfired spectacularly.
The Spain international cut a frustrated figure in the stands at the Santiago Bernabeu as he watched his side’s capitulation against the Dutch champions, surrendering a first-leg lead after a 4-1 hammering to exit the competition 5-3 on aggregate.
Ramos was only looking on from the stands after his decision to pick up a late booking at the Johan Cruyff Arena in February in a bid to to save himself for a quarter-final appearance.

However, UEFA charged the player for getting deliberately booked – and therefore susopended – handing him an extra ban that would have seen him also sit out the first-leg of a last-eight tie.
In any case, he didn’t have to worry about missing that too, as Real fell apart without their captain at the back.
Ajax had turned the clash on its head inside 18 minutes thanks to strikes from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres.
Former Southampton forward Dusan Tadic was a constant thorn in Real’s side, and he added a third with a glorious curling effort from the edge of the box.

Marco Asensio’s response originally threatened a comeback from the hosts, but Lasse Schone finished the job with a breathtaking free-kick.
Photographers weren’t the only ones to capture Ramos’s irritation at the scenes unfolding in front of him.
Amazon Prime cameras joined the 32-year-old in his box, capturing his every curse and exasperated expression to cross his face.
The streaming service are producing an eight-part documentary on the Spain star, which is set to be available later this year.
