Serial sex offender, 48, caught with ‘A Paedophile’s Handbook’ could be free in weeks

Sex monster, 48, who had sex with a 15-year-old, wrote a sick fantasy story abut raping a nine-year-old girl and was caught with ‘A Paedophile’s Handbook’ could be free in weeks

A serial sex offender once caught with a file labelled ‘The Pedophile’s Handbook’ will remain behind bars for now in order to protect the community.

Anthony James Barrie, 48, has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation and remain in custody until at least August 1 by the NSW Supreme Court.

His long-term future in custody is expected to be decided in late July.

The Newcastle-born man’s sex crimes span decades, beginning as a juvenile when he broke into a sports centre to watch women shower and into homes to fondle women’s underwear.

After being jailed for having sex with a 15-year-old girl and grooming her friends, he penned a story in his cell about a nine-year-old girl being raped.

Later, on parole, he was found in possession of child abuse material including a USB with a file labelled ‘The Pedophile’s Handbook’.

Within two months of his next release, in May 2017, he breached his supervision order by sexting with the mother of a young child and joining Tinder Plus.

Barrie was next due for release in mid-2018 but then subjected to a continuing detention order.

He’s now eligible for parole again and argues he’s changed fundamentally, according to Justice Robertson Wright’s judgment published on Tuesday.

He even expressed a willingness to be assessed for anti-libidinal medication if released from custody.

But the conditional nature of the offer concerned Justice Wright.

‘I was not satisfied … the defendant had changed since being assessed by (doctors) or that his more recent claims of there being a fundamental shift in his thinking and that he was finally facing and telling the truth should be accepted,’ Justice Wright said.

The judge noted Barrie recently told a psychologist he wouldn’t consider intensive treatment for sex offenders or anti-libidinal medication because ‘at the end of the day it won’t change my high risk’.

‘He felt he did not want medication to be the control element for his deviance – he wanted to be in control of his risk management,’ the forensic psychologist wrote.

‘(He said) the medication reduced the masturbation but not the thoughts.’
