  • Seven injured after a car ploughed through pedestrians
  • Five pedestrians, two passengers in hospital with non-life threatening injuries
  • A 19-year-old driver has been arrested and is assisting police

Multiple people have been injured after a car crash forced a vehicle onto a footpath before careening through a group of pedestrians.

Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle colliding with pedestrians along Burwood Road in inner-west Sydney’s Burwood at about 12:25am on Sunday.

A total of seven people, five pedestrians and two passengers of a Toyota Camry, were injured during the incident.

They were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St George Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The 19-year-old driver of a Ford Ranger that mounted the footpath was arrested at the scene before being taken to Burwood Police Station where he is assisting police inquiries.

The Ford Ranger is believed to have hit the Toyota Camry – which was being used as a ride-share vehicle – while it accepted a fare before crashing through five pedestrians before coming to a standstill after colliding with a stationary vehicle.

NSW Ambulance Inspector, Dominic Wong,  described the scene as ‘chaotic’.

‘We treated a total number of seven patients, with injuries ranging from head injuries (and) chest injuries,’ he said, according to 7News.

‘Some patients were in serious conditions and others were walking, minor.’

NSW Police confirmed in a statement that officers from the Burwood Area Command have established a crime scene.

Specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit have also examined the scene.

‘As investigations continue traffic diversions have been implemented and motorists are urged to avoid the area,’ a statement from NSW Police reads.

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
