Sex Education’s Emma Mackey emulates Emily Brontë for new biopic set in Yorkshire

Sex Education’s Emma Mackey got into character as Wuthering Heights author Emily Brontë on Thursday and filmed new scenes at a church in Otley, Yorkshire, for the new biopic.

The actress, 25, wore a long black gown, reminiscent of the Victorian era, as she appeared to star in funeral scenes for the forthcoming film. 

Emma looked markedly different from her edgy Netflix character Maeve Wiley as she joined thespians Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Dowling and Amelia Gething at the rural filming location.

Her period gown featured ruffled trim on the sleeves, corset detailing and a sweeping neckline. 

Emma’s brunette tresses were tucked back in a neat plaited bun as she wore minimal make-up to emulate the literary icon. 

The star was spotted hastily rushing around the historic church while delivering a concerned expression, as the camera crew eagerly captured her every move. 

Actor Oliver, 34, appeared through a horizon of tombstones in black attire which included a floor-length coat.

The Invisible Man star’s honey locks were swept over to the side as he rocked thick side burns.  

Amelia, 22, who plays Emily’s sister Anne and Alexandra, 31, who stars as sibling Charlotte, both wore black costumes and elaborate hats as they talked to production in between takes. 

The Spanish Princess star looked radiant in her period ensemble as she was seen clutching her mobile phone while taking a break from filming.

Marking Frances O’Connor’s directorial debut, Emily – which is yet to have a release date – will follow the story of the famous author, best known for her iconic novel Wuthering Heights. 

The upcoming film will see Emma join the likes of Line Of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar, Ammonite star Gemma Jones and Dunkirk’s Fionn Whitehead. 

On the upcoming project, actress-turned-director Frances, 53, said: ‘Emily Brontë’s writing is steeped in such passion, feeling, violence, and fierce intelligence – that I’ve always yearned to know who she really was.  

‘Emily is about a rebel and misfit, a young woman daring to form herself, to embrace her true nature, despite the consequences. And, in creating an imagined life for her, I hope Emily Brontë will live again!’

Tim Haslam of Embankment, who is executive producing and financing the movie, added: ‘Frances’ storytelling is a breath of fresh air.

Born in 1818 in West Yorkshire, Emily was the fifth of six children, and spent most of her short life in the moorland village of Haworth, where her Irish father Patrick was curate.

But life dealt Emily a series of terrible blows as she lost her mother when she was three, then two older sisters when she was seven.
