Shane Ramsey: Family give harrowing update on Perth tradie fighting for life in Bali

The family of a carpenter placed in a coma after a horror moped crash while holidaying in Bali have revealed they face an anxious waiting game.

Shane Ramsey, 30, was riding a moped in in Seminyak on his way to watch the UFC with mates on Sunday when disaster struck.

The Perth tradie crashed into a pole and was rushed to hospital to be treated for a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, blood in his lungs, and severe brain damage.

He underwent emergency neurosurgery before he was placed into a coma, where he is expected to remain for days to allow the intense brain swelling to subside.

Doctors remain unsure of the extent of the damage caused to his brain.

Mr Ramsey was in Bali to be a groomsman at a mate’s wedding and had plans to buy a place when he returned home.

His mother Catherine was on a flight to Bali within hours of receiving the harrowing news to join her son’s friends at his hospital bedside.

‘They’ve been his friends all the way from childhood, these guys have not left the hospital. They’ve been here 24/7, they’re an incredible group,’ she told 7News.

She added that her son has ‘done a lot of damage, there’s no question about that’.

A GoFundMe was launched on Monday to help pay for Mr Ramsey’s medical bills and a future medical evacuation home as he didn’t have travel insurance.

‘Surgery alone cost $53,000, every night in hospital is an additional $9,000,’ organiser Amyleigh Mitchell wrote.

The fundraiser also aims to help fund the $150,000 needed for an air ambulance to bring Mr Ramsey back home when his condition improves.

His mother told Nine News that she’s prepared to sell her house to raise the funds needed to get her son home.

She has been blown away by the support after more than $70,000 was raised within 24 hours.

‘I’m his mum, I love him no matter what, but to hear that he is so selfless is amazing,’ Ms Ramsey said.

‘We’ve received incredible messages and donations from people we don’t even know, people even offering to fly over to be with him.’

She also pleaded with Aussies heading to Bali to steer clear of moped and motorbikes.

‘Don’t do it, it’s just too dangerous,’ she said.

Mr Ramsey’s harrowing story also prompted WA Premier Roger Cook to plea for holidaymakers to get travel insurance before heading abroad.

‘It’s the easiest way to protect yourself and keep yourself safe overseas,’ he said.

Mr Ramsey had just completed a three year apprenticeship and was looking forward about the future ahead.

The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to raise awareness about the fundraiser.

He recalled bumping into his former apprentice a few weeks ago as he described Mr Ramsey as a great guy.

‘You forget how f***ing fragile life can be (and) how quick everything can change,’ he wrote.
