Shane Ramsey: Family of Aussie tradie left fighting for his life in the wake of a horror moped crash in Bali make heartbreaking decision – as they reveal his final selfless act

EXCLUSIVE

The heartbroken family of a tradie who suffered critical head injuries following a horror moped crash in Bali turned off his life support this morning, as they revealed he has ‘given the gift of life’ by donating his organs.

Shane Ramsey, 30, had been visiting the Indonesian island for a wedding and was riding a moped in Seminyak on Sunday when he crashed into a roadside pole.

He was not wearing a helmet and did not have travel insurance, which would have only cost about $50 a week.

Mr Ramsey was rushed to hospital where he underwent brain surgery and has been in a coma ever since, wracking up huge hospital bills.

His family paid $70,000 for him to undergo emergency neurosurgery and secured a medical evacuation flight, believed to cost around $150,000.

Mr Ramsey landed in Perth shortly after 5pm on Thursday and was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital’s intensive care unit.

However, his mother, Catherine Ramsey, said she and her family were left ‘broken’ after deciding to switch his life support off in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

‘It was turned off at 3.18am when he was taken to the theatre to give the gift of life,’ Ms Ramsey told Daily Mail Australia.

It is understood Shane will donate all of his organs to those in urgent need of a transplant.

Ms Ramsey previously told Daily Mail Australia Mr Ramsey had suffered three bleeds on the brain – necessitating the surgery – and a fractured skull.

He was on his way to watch a UFC fight with friends when the accident happened.

His mother earlier told Nine News she would sell their family home to pay for his medical bills if she had to.

‘I just want to get him home, we’re in a strange country,’ she said.

Doctors were unsure of the extent of the damage caused to his brain.

Mr Ramsey had plans to buy a property when he returned home.

A GoFundMe was launched last Monday to help pay for Mr Ramsey’s medical bills and the potential medical evacuation home.

Almost $130,000 has been raised at time of publication.

Mr Ramsey had just completed a three year apprenticeship and was looking forward to the future ahead.

The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to raise awareness about the fundraiser.

He recalled bumping into his former apprentice a few weeks ago.

‘You forget how f***ing fragile life can be (and) how quick everything can change,’ he wrote.
