Baa-ck off! Stroppy sheep charges dog and head-butts the collie in stand-off at Scottish farm

  • Two rams take on a border collie in Lockerbie, Scotland, to avoid being herded
  • The sheep first stand up to the sheepdog – before one of them suddenly charges
  • It lowers its head and thrusts forward as the dog, Buzz, turns and bares its teeth
  • The exchange continues until the sheep admit defeat and slowly back into a pen

Watching a dog round up a flock of sheep is one of the beautiful sights of the countryside.

But these two rams appear to reverse the rules as they charge down a lone border collie in Scotland.

The footage from Lockerbie shows the sheep standing up to the dog – before one of them suddenly charges and head-butts the hound.

It lowers its head and thrusts itself forward as the pooch, believed to be called Buzz, bares its teeth during the October 13 showdown.

The dog refuses to be intimidated and quickly spins to face the sheep, while a farmer continues to whistle instructions.

The same ram launches a second assault but appears to hold back from butting into the sheepdog.

The farmer softly commands ‘lie down’, which tells the dog to slow down. If it was said sharply or loudly it is usually a signal for the animal to stop altogether.

The ram and the dog engage in a game of wits as the hound slowly creeps forward in a crouched position.

Sensing it may be beaten, the much larger sheep backs off, with the second stamping its hoof and edging forward.

The exchange continues for around ten seconds until the farmer whistles for the dog to flank the sheep in a bid to corner them between a wire fence and a small pen.

This seemed to signal defeat for the sheep as they continued to slowly back away from the sheepdog until they were trapped in a small metal pen in the corner of the field.

The farmer says ‘that’ll do’, which is a call for the dog to stop what its doing and return to the handler.
