Sheffield United want Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard on loan in their survival bid

Sheffield United ‘prepared to cover Jesse Lingard’s £100,000-per-week wages as Chris Wilder targets loan deal for Manchester United outcast’

  • Jesse Lingard hasn’t played for Man United since an EFL Cup game in September
  • The 28-year-old hasn’t started a Premier League game since New Year’s Day
  • Sheffield United are out for reinforcements after worst start in league history
  • The club are weary of costs after splashing out £53 on players in the summer

Sheffield United are interested in a loan deal for out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, reports MEN.

Chris Wilder’s side are looking to get their season up and running with some reinforcements in the January transfer window, after enduring the worst start in top-flight history.

Their 3-2 defeat by United on Thursday evening was their 12th in 13 matches, with their solitary point coming in a 1-1 draw against Fulham in October.

Jesse Lingard has only featured in two EFL Cup games this season for Manchester United

The side might be restricted to loan deals in the window however, after spending £53million on new signings in the summer transfer window. With Championship football a real possibility next season, they need to be wary of their spending.

Wilder is understood to have had talks with counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match, with Lingard clearly not in Solskjaer’s plans going forward.

Lingard has only made two appearances for the Red Devils all season, and they came in EFL Cup games. He hasn’t played in the Premier League all season, and the last time he started for the side in the top flight was on New Year’s Day.

It’s a fall from grace for Lingard, who has made over 200 appearances for the side, and played a key role in England’s march towards the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.

Lingard, who turned 28 last week, only has six months left on his contract but it’s believed that United could trigger a one-year extension in order to receive a fee for him at the end of the season.

Sheffield United could come at a crossroads in the deal though, with the club expected to cover the majority of his £100,000-per-week wages.
