Sheffield Wednesday finally get their hands on team’s kit

  • Sheffield Wednesday supporters have slated their team after kits failed to arrive
  • The kit, which marks Wednesday’s 150th anniversary, was delayed many times
  • Six weeks into the season, the club are confident the strips will come this week

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will finally be able to get their hands on their team’s new kit – more than six weeks after the start of the season.

The club have been slated by some sections of their support after a series of delays meant that the home and away strips, which mark Wednesday’s 150th anniversary, failed to arrive at Hillsborough.

At one stage a kit unveiling at a community event, at which 15,000 supporters were expected, had to be cancelled.

However, club officials say the first batch of strips is currently in freight and will be delivered this week.

They are confident that Owls supporters will be able to buy them in time for Sunday’s lunchtime Championship clash with their cross-city rivals.

Wednesday ditched Sports Direct earlier this year and brought the manufacturing process in house in a bid to improve quality and price and make more money.

But the firm chosen tried to double a price which had won them the tender and, following terse negotiations, talks broke down at the end of June.

A new supplier was found and kits were unveiled on August 2 – just three days before the first league match of the season.

‘The first batch of retail kit is currently in freight and we are expecting delivery this week to have it in store for sale ahead of the derby match,’ a club spokesman said.

‘More deliveries will then take place throughout the remainder of September and October.’
