Sheridan Smith praised for her acting in No Return as fans notice she reunites with Michael Jibson

Sheridan Smith has been lauded by fans for her ‘amazing’ performance in ITV’s latest drama No Return, which premiered on Monday night.

The actress, 40, received rave reviews for her portrayal of Kathy, a mum who desperately defends her son Noah (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) when an incident at a beach party during their Turkey family holiday gets him into legal trouble.

Viewers also noted that her on-screen husband Martin was played by Michael Jibson, who she starred alongside in BBC’s recent miniseries, Four Lives. 

One began: ‘If it’s got Sheridan Smith in it you know it’s gonna be a cracker #noreturn,’ with another adding, ‘Sheridan Smith is amazing in anything she is in #NoReturn.’

A third penned: ‘Sheridan Smith is amazing. Anything she’s in is amazing. #noreturn #sheridanssmith.’

Following one scene which saw Kathy and Martin engage in a steamy romp, fans took to their keyboards to note that the actors had previously feuded in Four Lives.

Four Lives followed the notorious Grindr serial killer Stephen Port (played by Stephen Merchant), in a drama based on true events. 

Sheridan starred as Sarah Sak, the mother of Stephen’s first victim Anthony Walgate, in the series which showed the families of his victims fight for justice in the face of a now widely-condemned police investigation.

Port, 46, lured four unsuspecting victims to his east London flat then plied them with a fatal dose of date rape drug GHB before dumping their bodies nearby as part of a sick fetish for sex with unconscious men in 2014 and 2015.

The show was set to be released in 2020, but had to be delayed because of an inquest into the Metropolitan Police’s investigation into Port’s crimes.

Officers DC Slaymaker (a real officer played by Michael) and Det. Sqt. O’Donnell (Ben Cartwright) were shown latching onto the fact that Anthony had met a man named Joe Dean (an alias used by Port) for sex, after finding him on an escort service.

In December, the ten week inquest culminated in a jury ruling that there had been police ‘failures’ in the investigation, and had they been avoided, some of his victims may still be alive.

The opening episode saw Jenna accused of sleeping with 15-year-old student Kyle Hope (Samuel Bottomley) after a night out celebrating her promotion. 

Sheridan will take to the judging panel alongside Beverley Knight, Jason Manford and Adam Lambert in ITV’s latest reality show Starstruck, a Stars In Their Eyes reboot.

The TV staple invited members of the public to dress up as their favourite music star and perform their chosen artist’s hits to an audience between 1990 and 2006.

On the rebooted series, each episode will reportedly see four teams of three battle it out to win the judges’ votes.

Each of the teams will impersonate their musical icon, with members of the winning group then competing against each other for a place in the final.

Contestants who make it all the way to the final show could reportedly be in with a chance of winning a £50,000 prize.
