Matt Shirvington returned to Sunrise just days after viewers started questioning the new host’s prolonged absence from the breakfast program.

The show returned to regular programming last Monday, with co-host Natalie Barr appearing on the desk alongside newsreader Edwina Bartholomew and sports reporter Mark Berett but Shirvo has been notably absent.

Shirvo, 45, returned to the program on Wednesday and explained he had enjoyed an extended break with his wife Jessica and their children.

‘It’s so good to be back. It was an amazing break, just so nice to relax and chill out,’ he told viewers.

‘I didn’t do much but I went up to the Gold Coast, it rained so I spent a lot of time in the hotel room with the family which was nice and how good are the sleep ins.’

Shirvo had been absent from the show, with Matt Doran filling in for the former Olympic athlete.

Fans of the program took to social media to question Shirvo’s return on Tuesday.

‘Where was Shirvo?’ one viewer asked, while another similarly penned, ‘Have I missed something?? Where’s Shirvo!!’

Meanwhile, some fans have enjoyed seeing a fresh face in place of Shirvo, with many suggesting Matt Doran take his place for good.

‘Great to see Matt Doran on the desk again,’ someone said.

‘Please keep Matt on during the week. Like a breath of fresh air,’ added another.

One user wrote: ‘Shirvo is a nice guy, but Matt is a much better presenter. More spontaneous, articulate and a great interview and reporter!’

In November, Shivo’s shock Channel Seven career move was revealed.

The television presenter has been filming scenes for a guest acting role in the long-running drama Home and Away.

Details of Shirvington’s appearance in the show have been kept secret, but 7News reports that the celebrity will be ‘playing himself’ on the hit soap.
