Shoaib Bashir hails ‘very special moment’ as rookie spinner becomes second youngest England bowler to take a Test five-for before India dampened their chances of victory

  • India are 152 runs away from series victory over England at end of day three
  • England spinner Shoaib Bashir completed a five-for to continue fairytale rise
  • Bashir was called up for the tour after just six first-class games for Somerset

Shoaib Bashir hailed a ‘very special moment’ after becoming the second youngest England bowler to take a Test five-wicket haul to complete his rapid fairy-tale rise from county obscurity to the very top.

The 20-year-old off-spinner put his head to the Ranchi ground in a Sujud gesture of thanks after trapping Akash Deep lbw to add to his four wickets on day two as India were bowled out for 307, a deficit of 46.

England then crashed to 145 all out from the riches of 110 for three before India knocked off 40 of their victory target of 192 by the close to leave Bashir and his fellow inexperienced spinner Tom Hartley needing to bowl them to a fourth day miracle.

But England’s precarious situation took nothing away from the rookie who was called up for this tour on the back of just six first-class appearances for Somerset.

‘It was a very special moment on my journey,’ said Bashir. ‘Two years ago I would never have dreamt anything like this could happen.

‘It was quite emotional actually. I lost both my grandads around a year and a half ago and they used to just sit and watch Test cricket all the time. Their wish was to see me on TV and I know they’re supporting me from up above.’

The third day of the fourth Test saw another controversial DRS decision in a series littered with them when Joe Root was given lbw on review, a key moment that was slammed by former England captain Michael Vaughan.

‘The Root dismissal was a shocker for the technology,’ said Vaughan on the BBC. ‘Over half the ball looked to have pitched outside leg-stump but it came up red.

‘I’d be interested to know why we haven’t seen many replays of the dismissal on TV. Surely it’s the main moment of the innings so we should be seeing it a lot more.’
