Stephen A. Smith’s chances of one day running the United States of America appear to have a much bigger chance of turning into reality than many realize.

According to a shock new poll that surveyed more than 1,000 likely American voters in the next Presidential election, Smith garnered more than 20 percent of the vote in head-to-head primaries against top Democrats vying to sit in the Oval Office in a few years.

The poll was revealed on ‘Pablo Torre Finds Out’, with Smith losing to Kamala Harris 45 percent to 24. The scores are much closer when Smith faces both U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Against Newsom, Smith trails by three percentage points, and is behind Ocasio-Cortez by four, with a margin of error of four points.

Maybe Smith’s most impressive result is being the Democratic candidate and trailing current Vice President JD Vance 38 to 34 percent.

‘Based on what I see in these numbers, he should run,’ said Mark Mitchell, Rasmussen’s head pollster, who conducted the measure.

Smith was trending around 2 percent in polls in February to be the Democratic nominee for President in 2028. The sharp uptick could be credited to non-sports fans finding out about the ESPN personality.

In a hypothetical three-way Presidential matchup where Harris gets the Democratic nomination, with Smith running as a third-party candidate, Vance would get 40 percent of the vote, compared to 37 for Harris and 11 for Smith.

That performance would make Smith one of the best-performing third-party candidates in American history and possibly the first since George Wallace in 1968 to pick up an electoral vote.

Smith also may be considered down ballot, with a term as Vice President in his future.

The poll has Mark Cuban as the best second-in-line choice at 14 percent, with Smith tied with Dwayne Johnson right behind at 12 percent. Other celebrities such as Matthew McConaughey (10), Jon Stewart (9) and Oprah Winfrey (7) are trailing the top trio.

Smith has not made another declaration as to his long-term status amid his current feud with LeBron James after the duo got into a heated argument before a Lakers game last month.
