The young man found dead in a hotel room with ‘suspicious injuries’ survived being shot at from point blank range seven years ago.

Matthew Pascoe, 35, was found unresponsive at the Hinterland Hotel on Station Street in Nerang, on the Gold Coast, about 11.15am on Saturday.

Police declared his death as suspicious after the 35-year-old was found with ‘significant head and internal injuries’.

On Thursday, a 34-year-old Nerang man was charged with one count of murder.

Mr Pascoe’s sister Caitlyn Pascoe broke her silence to share her gratitude to detectives for the swift development.

‘We miss him dearly and want to thank the police for getting us answers so soon,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Pascoe’s death comes after he miraculously survived being shot at from point blank range seven years ago.

In April 2018, the then 28-year-old got into an argument with another man, Tyson James Scott Boulden, then 22, at a park in Nerang.

Boulden was found to have a sawed off shotgun, which ‘unintentionally’ discharged and sprayed Mr Pascoe’s legs with pellets.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and possessing a shortened firearm and was handed a three-year prison sentence.

Daily Mail Australia does not suggest the shooting is related to Mr Pascoe’s death in any way or that Mr Boulden was involved.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said Mr Pascoe checked into the hotel with his mother around 2pm on Friday and went out three hours later.

He was last seen on CCTV footage at the hotel’s reception about 6.20pm before he returned to his room, where the alleged murder is believed to have taken place.

Ms Pascoe paid tribute to her brother in a GoFundMe raising funds for his funeral, describing him as ‘a bright light’ to his loved ones.

‘It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved brother, Matthew Pascoe, who left us far too soon,’ she wrote.

‘Matthew was more than just a brother – he was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him.

‘His kind heart, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends touched so many. Losing him has left an immeasurable void in our lives.’

Ms Pascoe said his loss will be felt immeasurably, especially for his nieces and nephews ‘who thought the absolute world of him’.

‘As we begin to navigate the heartbreak of this loss, we are hoping to raise funds to give Matthew the heartfelt and dignified farewell he deserves,’ she said.

‘If you’re unable to donate, we ask that you please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.’
