After boarding the train in Williamsburg, Mr Kirchoff said he originally thought the duck was a small, white dog.

He told told am NewYork: ‘I looked up to see that the white dog in the woman’s arms was actually a duck, a few feet from me.

‘It quacked a bit more and she let him down to walk around the subway, on its leash.’

The bird did not appear to be a fan of his restraints and was seen struggling on the floor of the carriage.

When another commuter asked about the unusual pet, its owner can be heard saying: ‘We got him when he was a chick.’
