A Florida sheriff’s deputy could be fired after body camera and cellphone videos showed him jerking a middle school girl’s head back during a disturbance.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a statement on Friday he was ‘very upset’ by the video footage the school resource officer, who has not been named, yanking the girl by her hair as a large crowd of students looked on.
The department said the deputy ‘used an inappropriate amount of force’ on the girl, who was briefly detained before being released to a parent. She was not arrested.
An Orange County sheriff’s deputy is facing termination over the way he treated this middle school student in white headwrap during a disturbance Thursday
The deputy accused the girl of fighting outside an apartment complex. He pulled her away from other teens and pinned her against a cruiser
The deputy forcefully yanked the girl’s head back, causing her to scream
‘I am very upset by what I saw on that video,’ Mina said in a statement posted on the agency’s Facebook. ‘The actions of this deputy appear to violate some of the most important values and expectations that I have set as sheriff. The type of behavior I witnessed on the video and on body worn camera video will not be tolerated.’
Deputies were called to the Summerset apartments on Thursday evening for reports of a fight between a large group of students, reported Orlando Sentinel.
The brawl purportedly stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two female students at Westridge Middle School.
He led the wailing student to the back of the cruiser and forced her inside, as a large crowd of children looked on
The officer whipped out his baton and screamed at the bystanders, ‘You’re all stupid little children!’
In the body camera video released by the sheriff’s office, a deputy confronts a visibly agitated girl in a white headwrap who is being held back by other teens.
He tries to calm her down and instructs her to lean against a patrol vehicle.
The girl continues screaming, at which point a school resource office intervenes, yelling at her that she was the one stirring up trouble at school.
The resource deputy then pins the girl’s arms behind her back.
This deputy was immediately removed from Westridge Middle school pending termination
‘I’m tired of this s***!’ the deputy shouts as he forcefully grabs the girl by the back of her head and jerks it backwards.
The girl continues screaming as the cop leads her to his cruiser and forces her into the backseat.
As the crowd of bystanders roars, the cop whips out his baton and orders everyone to back up.
‘This is because you’re silly! You’re all stupid little children!’ he shouts.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy, who was hired in February, was immediately removed from the school pending termination.
The agency’s Professional Standards Division has launched an internal investigation into the deputy’s conducts and will submit its results to the State Attorney’s Office for review.
Sheriff Mina said at a press conference on Friday that the deputy’s actions were ‘totally inappropriate’ and he was ‘out of control.’
