  • He lost his temper after two men accidentally stepped out in front of his car
  • Bystanders and the two targets had to jump out of the way of the silver vehicle
  • Quartermaine was spared jail after admitting dangerous driving, drug-driving and assaulting a police officer

Shocking footage shows the moment a teenage university student attempted to mow down two pedestrians after they accidentally stepped out in front of his car.

Leon Quartermaine, 19, mounted the pavement in his Peugeot 206 and sped at the two men after losing his temper in a city centre park in Southampton, Hampshire.

CCTV shows the pair and terrified bystanders having to jump out of the way as the silver vehicle heads directly at them.

Judge Alexia Power told the student, who had cannabis in his system at the time, should be ‘ashamed’ of himself as she handed him an 11-month prison sentence, suspended for 15 months at Southampton Crown Court.

Prosecutor Rob Harding said Quartermaine was spotted on CCTV arguing with two men outside a Debenhams after the pair mistakenly walked in front of his car.

After a short argument, the teenager was seen getting back into his car, before driving across the road’s central reservation.

But instead of driving away, Mr Harding told the court Quartermaine raced around a nearby roundabout and returned to try to run down the two men.

Mr Harding said: ‘A member of the public had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.’

The prosecutor added that when he was arrested, Quartermaine had cannabis in his system and he also attacked two police officers, scratching at one’s neck and hitting and kicking another.

Quartermaine, a health and fitness student at Southampton Solent University, admitted dangerous driving, drug-driving and assaulting a police officer during the incident in November last year.

Handing him the suspended jail term, Judge Power told him: ‘You should quite rightly be ashamed of yourself for this dangerous behaviour, which showed little regard for the safety of others.

‘You should be thankful you are not facing more serious charges, which you would had you actually hit those people.’

The judge also ordered he carry out 80 hours unpaid work.

Mitigating, Richard Martin admitted his client, who had moved to Southampton from his family’s home in London, did suffer from anger problems and had struggled to adapt to life at university, but said the incident was ‘out of character’.
