Shocking moment roller coaster derails at Brazilian amusement park, injuring 10 people

  • Ten people were injured after a roller coaster derailed in Fortaleza, Brazil, on Tuesday night
  • Footage recorded by a woman who was injured showed the ride in the middle of its third lap as it was about to make a turn
  • Authorities said the accident was sparked by a broken part in of the carts
  • The injured victims suffered leg injuries, according to a young man in one cart

At least 10 people were injured after they were thrown off roller coaster carts that derailed at an amusement park in northeastern Brazil.

The group was enjoying the ride when it suddenly jumped out off the track at the park in Maranguape, Fortaleza, on Tuesday night.

A video, recorded by one of the victims seated towards the back of the ride, showed the group enjoyed themselves and yelling as the roller coaster was nearing a turn on the tracks.

Within a matter of seconds, the roller coaster veered off the track and tipped over.

Footage showed carts and sections of the track lying on the ground.

Authorities said the accident was caused by a broken part in one of the carts.

A teacher, who withheld their name, said everything appeared to be normal after the roller coaster made two laps around the tracks.

But the third could have been fatal as she and the rest of the group fell out and landed on the ground, according to Brazilian news outlet G1.

‘We went up and we heard a creak on the [roller coaster],’ she recalled. ‘The second time we went down fast and when it was the third time it broke.’

She said that her mental psyche remains ‘shaken because something worse could have happened.’ Two girls that were sitting with her also fell from the cart.

Her aunt and two of her cousins – including one who recorded the accident – were also injured.

Brazilian newspaper O Pove reported that the authorities were not alerted of the incident after it happened.

A young man, who also chose to withhold their name, told G1 that he was briefly unconscious after falling out of one of the carts.

He added that most of the people suffered leg injuries caused by the metal security bars on the carts and that he is still dealing with the lingering effects of the accident.

‘So far I’m not well, very sore, (I have a) headache and psychologically very shaken,’ the person said. ‘I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through. I was thrown away! I passed out, woke up stunned, thinking about my family members, totally desperate and in shock.’

The accident comes after 15 people, including five children, escaped with injuries following a fairground ride crash in India’s Punjab region on Sunday.

A video recorded by a bystander showed the spinning drop tower losing speed before plummeting down instead of slowing.

The impact of the accident threw fairground visitors from their seats as it collided with the platform below.

Onlookers near the ride could be heard screaming, watching as their loved ones dropped straight down without stopping.
