Several other vehicles subsequently crashed into the back of the semi trailer as there was heavy fog in the area at the time, KCBD reported.

The first crash blocked westbound lanes of US 84 and as investigators were at the scene a second truck overturned at the side of the road.

The moving truck hit one DPS trooper and pinned another person inside another truck. A Lubbock Fire Department rescue team manged to take the driver out from the pickup truck.

A Department of Public Safety trooper, seen above in the yellow HiVis jacket, narrowly avoided serious injury as he ran out of the way to avoid the truck as it overturned

Both people were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries and are expected to survive.

Caleb Holder, who works for KCBD as a  photographer, was filming the accident scene, when a second 18-wheeler jackknifed to avoid a red SUV that changed lanes in front of it.

The truck can be seen coming towards the trooper as others run to avoid it, before the trailer overturns and it crashes into other cars.

Holder told the outlet : ‘I saw that trailer coming and I knew I had to run away from it. Part of my job is to go to breaking news scenes and shoot video of it or whatever it is, that includes car crashes sometimes , I was looking in that direction.
