This is the heart-stopping moment a stolen car skidded onto the wrong side of a busy Melbourne road.

The incident took place on Station Street Sunday afternoon, with the commodore travelling for almost 80 metres before screeching to a halt.

A driver travelling in the opposite direction was forced to turn sharply as the vehicle headed towards him and caught the exchange in dramatic dashcam footage.

‘All of a sudden a short distance away from the Eastern Freeway I saw a car lose control,’ the witness told 9News.

The man claimed the vehicle had veered to the wrong side, skidding between 70 and 80 metres before coming to a stop after crashing into two properties. 

Two men fled the vehicle and fled the scene, with the man’s footage capturing one wearing a white hoodie and carrying bags.

‘I turned the car around to see if I could help and two guys ran out of the car as fast as they could,’ the stunned witness said.

‘They were two young guys, they didn’t look too athletic.’ 

No one is believed to have been injured, with shocked onlookers running seen running to the car to help. 

Police confirmed they are investigating the incident.
