Shoppers are split over £1 engagement ring from Asda

While Asda is loved by bargain-seeking shoppers for its low prices, that doesn’t mean any of them would be pleased to receive on of its budget engagement rings.

The £1 ring, which comes with a crimson heart-shaped box, was released by the store’s George Home line for Valentine’s Day, and has caught the attention of the Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group.

Some found it great that people on a budget will be able to propose with the cheap ring, and added that the price of the sparkler should not matter.

Others, however, argued that buying such a cheap ring shows a lack of thought or consideration for your partner.

Budget supermarket Asda has divided opinions with the £1 novelty engagement ring it released for Valentine’s Day

While some said the price of the ring was too low, others said money should not matter in love and that it shouldn't matter if someone proposed with a ring made of candy

The piece of jewellery is made of plastic and includes a fake diamond and a silver-coloured band.

The product description invited Asda shoppers to ‘share some love with this ring,’ and stressed the heart box is included in the price tag.

Shoppers were quickly debating whether they would agree to walk down the aisle with someone who popped the question with a £1 trinket, with some saying that they would happily say yes.

‘If you truly want to marry someone it’s not about the ring or the wedding, but the marriage and life you have together,’ one said.

‘If I hadn’t got a family heirloom for my engagement ring I’d have accepted anything to know that we were getting married,’ they went on.

Another said: ‘Love this, If you haven’t the money at the right moment, this is ideal, because once you want to make it official & you put whatever ring on her finger… she will be happy if she really loves you.

‘Think this is lovely. There may be people who have no money right now but want to express their love. It shouldn’t be the price that matters,’ another added.

People said the price of the engagement ring should not matter and that you can't put a price tag on love

People said the price of the engagement ring should not matter and that you can’t put a price tag on love

‘Everyone laughing at this but if you really loved someone it wouldn’t matter if they gave you a Haribo ring! Love as no price tag,’ one said.

‘Is it really the price of a ring people are laughing about. It doesn’t matter how much a ring costs. As long as the love and thought is there. Who cares?. Some people may not be able to afford a ring for their partners,’ another pointed out.

However, some said the ring was too cheap and that they would turn down a proposal because of it.

‘If my fella bought me this engagement ring for a pound well I’d shove it up his a** and wouldn’t be walking down no aisle,’ one candidly said.

Some said they would turn down their significant others if they proposed with that ring. Others said it is a great place holder for a new ring, or a toy kids can offer their school crushes

‘Some lucky ladies on Valentine’s this year….. no expense spared by your Gaz,’ another joked.

One said they do not object cheap rings, but that £1 was just not enough money for an engagement ring, and that the cheap price showed a lack of consideration for their partners.

‘£1 come on! My engagement ring cost £14 from Argos and I loveddddd it! So I completely agree with you but going to Asda and buying a £1 ring hasn’t given it much thought or consideration,’ one said.

Some said the ring, which was branded a ‘novelty ring’ by Asda itself, would be a great place holder for a future, more suitable ring, or a gift for children to propose to their school crushes with.

One cheeky couple also joked they could use the ring to pretend to get engaged at restaurant to get free meals.
