Shoppers outraged as the new Cottee’s jam jars shrink

‘Shrinkflation’ strikes again: Customers outraged as the new Cottee’s jam jar size

  • Shoppers fear 500g Cottee’s jam jar is discontinued
  • The 500g jar is not available online and on clearance shelf in store
  • A 375g jar is available for same price

Customers are outraged after noticing a popular jar of Cottee’s jam has disappeared from shelves with fears it will be replaced with a smaller size for the same price.

One shopper claims the 500g jar of Cottee’s apricot jam, priced at $3, has been secretly discontinued – but a 375g jar has become newly available for $2.80.

A conversation about ‘shrinkflation’ sparked on Reddit after the two sizes were compared in store.

‘The old 500g Cottee’s jam was $3 at my local Woolworths. The new 375g jars are $2.80,’ the Redditor wrote alongside an image.

‘The old 500g jar got put on clearance and are completely gone forever. Buy them while you can.’

It appears all flavours have been effected, not just apricot.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Kraft Heinz, the company that owns Cottee’s, for a comment.

On both the Woolworths and Coles website, the 500g jar of Cottee's apricot jam isn't available. The 375g jars also appear under the 'new' tab on the Woolworths app, while the larger option can't be found

Hundreds of people reacted to the Reddit post, and many were disappointed.

‘Absolutely criminal that it’s more than 1/5th smaller but still almost the same price,’ one Redditor wrote.

‘Such a joke,’ another said, a third added: ‘Always look at the unit pricing – price per 100g.’

Others were sceptical with one person writing: ‘I thought they’d always had two sizes. Seems unlikely that they’d phase out the regular 500g jars.’

The price of the box of chocolates, which recently removed two popular treats, has angered Australians who say it’s ‘ridiculous’. Others joked you need Afterpay to fund the purchase.

Favourites boxes are sold in different sizes depending on the retailer, making it harder for shoppers to compare prices.

However the $32 box breaks down to a whopping $3.90 per 100grams, while the ‘regular’ sized box works out at $2.12 per 100grams.
