Woolworths responded by saying they get a lot of requests to start selling the products early.
‘The reason why they’re already on the shelves is that we get loads of requests from customers who want to buy Easter Eggs early,’they wrote on Twitter.
‘We understand you don’t feel the same way though and we’ve passed your feedback on to the team. Thanks.’
Coles made a similar statement: ‘Customer demand is high for delicious treats so we start stocking a range of Easter eggs from early January.
‘We know that many customers like to spread the cost of buying Easter gifts by buying some each week and so offering an early selection helps them to do this.’
The country’s largest chains sparked a similar furore earlier this week when they started selling hot cross buns.
Woolworths rolled out a new Brioche flavour of hot cross bun, alongside ‘Traditional’, ‘Fruitless’ and ‘Mini Cadbury Chocolate Chip’.
Coles’ six hot cross bun flavours are ‘Traditional’, ‘100% Australian fruit’, ‘Fruit Free’, ‘Chocolate’, ‘Apple and Cinnamon’ and ‘Gluten Free’.

A Daily Mail Australia online poll held on Monday afternoon asked readers whether January 1 was too early to be selling the sticky sweet bun.
Over 75 per cent of respondents said ‘yes’, the New Year is too early to be selling the Easter buns, when the holiday is not until April.
The remaining 25 per cent of people polled said they don’t mind the buns being sold from January.
