  • It was initially thought that Madrid forward Ronaldo double touched the ball

Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the penalty spot for Real Madrid in their last-16 Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

However, there was a touch of controversy with the Portuguese star’s spot-kick as he made it 1-1 at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Many fans questioned whether Ronaldo illegally touched the ball with his left foot as it appeared to move before he struck it towards goal.

However, on closer inspection, the turf beneath the ball seemed to have moved before he struck it with his right foot, meaning the goal was correctly given.

And after seeing the replays of the penalty close up, BT Sport pundits Michael Owen and Paul Clement agreed that it was a fair penalty.

Former Liverpool and England striker Owen said: ‘It’s amazing. As soon as I saw the pen I thought “he’s double touched that, it should be disallowed”.

However, the turf beneath the ball appeared to move, meaning the ball flicked up

‘But if you watch it carefully it was actually the ground that just flicks the ball up. It just pops up and he almost volleys it – it’s amazing how he’s still so accurate when the ball moves. But it definitely shifted, just popped up a little bit it’s no question, it wasn’t a double touch.’

Meanwhile, former Swansea boss Clement jokingly claimed that Ronaldo’s penalty was excellent.

He added: ‘It takes a good player to do that! Tee it up for himself and volley it. No, there’s no way you can see that. It’s an excellent penalty. Areola went the right way and he’s not far away from it. The pace and the accuracy, very difficult to save that.’
