Simon Cowell reveals his son Eric ’10, hilariously asked him if he had ‘heard of One Direction’ as he admits there have been some years he ‘hasn’t liked’ Britain’s Got Talent

Simon Cowell has revealed his 10-year-old son Eric hilariously asked him if he had ever ‘heard of One Direction’.

The music mogul, 64, who helped to put the boy band together on X Factor in 2010, also told in the same interview that there have been years he ‘hasn’t liked Britain’s Got Talent’.

Speaking on Capital Breakfast, Simon told how he is going to be holding auditions to find a new boy band after realising there hasn’t been a successful one since One Direction went their separate ways in 2016.

Simon still enjoys hearing One Direction’s songs when they pop up on the radio and revealed his son Eric is ‘obsessed’ with them.

Host Sian Welby said: ‘Oh really? Oh, that’s nice, it’s a whole new generation.’

Simon replied: ‘He actually said to me, ‘have you heard of this band called One Direction, dad?’

‘Stop it!’ Sian said.

Simon said: ‘And I went, ‘yeah, why?’ and he went, ‘yeah, they’re really, really good.’ And I went, ‘oh, thanks.’

After finishing third on The X Factor in 2010, One Direction became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

After releasing five albums, they have been on an indefinite hiatus since 2016 with all the members pursuing solo careers.

Elsewhere during the interview, Simon admitted he hasn’t been impressed with every series of Britan’s Got Talent where he serves as head judge.

This year’s series was won by singer Sydnie Cristmas with Simon praising the final as one of the best ever.

Sian said: ‘Everyone was just such elite quality. Like, some acts that I’ve never seen, like the guys who did the taekwondo and they’re kicking all the plates and stuff. You’ve just never seen anything like it.’

Simon replied: Well, you know the thing is when you do these shows, everyone always says, ‘yes this is the best ever,’ and blah blah blah.

‘The truth is you can’t fake it. Either you like it, or you don’t. And I really, really liked it this year. There have been years where I haven’t liked it.’

He added: ‘I mean, after all the auditions, you sit there and you know who the finalists are, and you’re like, ‘oh my God. Seriously?’ And the winner’s announced, and I’m like, ‘oh great,’ you know? And then I’m off.’

Listen to Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby weekdays from 6am-10am across the UK on air, and on Global Player.
