Simon Thomas reveals he is saving his dead wife’s wedding ring for their son

Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas revealed that he has removed his wedding band five months after the death of his beloved wife.

Mr Thomas’ wife Gemma passed away last December, just three days after being diagnosed with acute myloid leukaemia.

The grieving husband said he was ‘crushed with indescribable pain’ after her death and spoke passionately on television about his grief, mental health and supporting his eight-year-old son, Ethan.

Since then Mr Thomas, 45, has announced that he is stepping down from his role at Sky Sports so he can dedicate his time and energy to his son.

In the heartfelt post Mr Thomas also said that he would be keeping his wife’s wedding ring for Ethan to give to his future partner.

The picture he shared on Instagram showed his bare hand, bearing no rings, with three rings sat in a box in the background.

He captioned the image: ‘With it being five months now and the symbolism of what happened yesterday it feels the right time to do this – something I never expected or wanted to ever do.

‘Her rings will now wait for the day Ethan hopefully gets to enjoy his day and if they’re half the person his mother was he’ll have done just right.

‘Mine will forever remain the physical symbol of what I had and lost.’

Writing in his personal blog earlier this week Mr Thomas, said his main reason for leaving sky was for Ethan.

‘I’m doing it for Ethan,’ he wrote. ‘On that first morning after she went I remember Ethan coming up to me in the lounge and through his tears he said these words: “Daddy, you know every weekend you go away and do the football, and I spend the weekend with Mummy, what do I do now?” And they have stuck with me ever since.’

‘He’s lost his mum, for him so much has changed, I can’t always be with him 24/7 but what I have no choice in, is I have to put him first.

‘I need to spend the next few months working out with him how we move forward.

‘What’s going to work for him, what isn’t?’

He also used the blog post to share his thoughts on his decision to leave Sky.

He added: ‘When the unhelpful minority have told me to get myself back to work, I’ve often replied with the same comment: if only it was that simple.

‘Being totally transparent, at this point in time I couldn’t return to my job with any integrity.

‘I have the financial security to be able to do this.

‘I’m very aware that in writing this there will be those for whom grief and returning to work has been a very different story.

‘I am fully aware that there will be those for whom the luxury of being able to make a decision like this just wasn’t an option,” he writes.

‘Whether they wanted to or not they had to go back to work just to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table. But this is why I’ve been able to do this.’
