Simon Thomas shares image of broken ‘Mummy’ mug

Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas has posted a heartbreaking picture of a broken ‘Mummy’ mug as he faces his first Christmas without his wife.

Gemma Thomas, 40, from Berkshire, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer, and died surrounded by friends and family three days later.

The heartbreaking tragedy came after Mrs Thomas visited her GP three times claiming to have been feeling unwell, only to be told she was fine and needed rest.

However, after finally being admitted to hospital for blood tests, she was last month diagnosed with the leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells that starts in the bone marrow.

Today, Mr Thomas posted a poignant picture on Instagram of a ‘Mummy’ mug with its handle broken, with the caption: ‘Mummy. Broken. #lightinthedarkness’.

He wrote: ‘Two weeks on since she went. I have only been able to read a fraction of the incredible outpouring of love and support for us on here in the painful days that followed.

‘One day, with my boy, we will read them. For now, all I can say from the depths of my heart, is thank you.’

Two weeks ago, an inconsolable Simon told his followers of his grief via Twitter, writing: ‘Just three days after falling ill with Acute Myloid Leukaemia, my dear wife Gemma passed away yesterday evening surrounded by her family and friends.

‘If you are a prayer – pray for my boy Ethan. 8yrs, precious and in bits. Thank you.’

In the following days, Mr Thomas spoke only about his grief on Instagram, sharing photographs of happier times alongside their eight-year-old boy.

Speaking to the Mirror previously, he said: ‘She felt very unwell last weekend and we took her to the doctor’s three times, but three times they didn’t seem concerned.

‘They just said to rest, but on Monday we took her to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. After lots of tests they diagnosed her with blood cancer but they didn’t know what.

‘A few hours later we were rushed to Churchill Hospital in Oxford, to specialists. They are an incredible team. We knew that we were in one of the very best places in the country.

‘For the first couple of days she was responding well, but yesterday morning she went downhill very quickly. She had bleeding on the brain. I was told yesterday morning she would be gone in a few hours.

‘My little boy had a little time with her but she wasn’t able to speak to him. She passed away just before 6pm last night [Friday]. There was a real sense of peace. Today is the hardest pain I have ever felt ever.’

Meanwhile, Mr Thomas today hit out at Amazon after a courier left a parcel delivery on his front doorstep.

Posting a picture of the large package, for Ethan’s Christmas, he wrote: ‘@AmazonUK My sons Christmas present. Your delivery driver might as well put a label on it saying help yourself and Happy Christmas to whoever fancies walking off with this!’

Amazon responded, saying: ‘Oh no! I’m so sorry your package was left in this manor! Were the contents broken or damaged? Has a safe place been set for unattended packages?’

But Mr Thomas hit back, writing: ‘The thing is you’re not sorry. You need to stop promising delivery dates that put the couriers under such pressure that they haven’t time to walk another 12 yards to put it in the “safe” place.’
