Simple U-turn rules quiz sparks furious debate among drivers – so can you get it right?

A road rule quiz question involving a legal U-turn has sparked intense debate among numerous drivers on social media.
The question was shared on the RACQ Facebook page on Wednesday morning and quickly resulted in a flurry of different responses.
The graphic shows a red car preparing to perform a U-turn, with an oncoming cyclist approaching from the opposite direction is heading into the same space.
A pedestrian can also be seen waiting to cross the road at the same point, while a blue car in a side street is indicating to turn right into the same lane.

‘The red car wants to perform a legal U-turn, who do they need to give way to before they can?’ the quiz asked.
Many responded by stating the red car must give way to the cyclist and the pedestrian.
‘No wonder there are so many accidents on the road. U-turning vehicles give way to all other traffic,’ one said.
Another felt ‘driving 100 metres up the road to find somewhere else legal to do a U-turn and not hold up traffic’ was a better option.
A third questioned how many people obtained their drivers licences, given the number of incorrect responses.
The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland later provided the correct answer on Facebook.
‘The red car needs to give way to the cyclist, pedestrian and the blue car. The cyclist can continue straight ahead as the pedestrian is not at a designated pedestrian or children’s crossing,’ they explained.
‘The blue car gives way to the pedestrian, who is at or near the intersection crossing the road they are entering. The red car must give way to all vehicles and pedestrians when doing a U-turn.’
This was backed up by the Queensland Department of Transport and Roads, who also confirmed the red car must give way to everyone.
‘When you are doing a U-turn, you must give way to all other vehicles and pedestrians – even if other vehicles are facing a give way or stop sign,’ its website states.
