Simpsons’ Al Jean slams Ted Cruz for using show in speech

Simpsons showrunner Al Jean was quick to shut down Ted Cruz on Thursday after the Texas senator used the cartoon’s characters to make a point.

‘The Democrats are the party of Lisa Simpson and Republicans are happily the party of Homer, Bart, Maggie and Marge,’ Cruz said at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Jean immediately took to Twitter to clear things up.

‘@TheSimpsons Ted Cruz says Maggie Simpson would vote for him. I think Ted’s the one who could use a pacifier in his mouth.’

And Jean wasn’t the only one to mock Cruz on social media. Anna Maltese also took to social media to criticize Cruz’s remark.

‘As a Simpsons animator for many years, I can say with 100% certainty that A) Lisa is officially the conscience of the family so…awesome. B) Neither Marge nor Homer are Republicans,’ she tweeted.

‘I think what this really comes down to is that @tedcruz is simply thirsty for a VO spot on the show and this – in addition to that Simpsons ‘audition’ video he made – is another cry for help in landing that gig,’ she added

Others also joined in on the criticism.

Writer Joe Berkowitz tweeted: ‘The entire point of the Simpsons is that Homer is a walking example of what not to do and Lisa is the voice of reason. Ted Cruz is the least self-aware organism on the planet.’

Another user tweeted: ‘Fun fact- Lisa Simpson grows up to be President. Ted Cruz does not.’

That user was referring to the The Simpsons season 11 episode Bart to the Future, which first aired in March 2000, and showed a glimpse into the future where Lisa had just been elected President of the United States in 2030.

‘You can’t make this sh*t up! Yes, Ted Cruz, we are the party of intelligence. Lisa Simpson was literally the only intelligent character in The Simpsons,’ another person wrote on Twitter.

The Republican senator was discussing gun control at the conference in Washington, DC, when he made the remark, which isn’t the first time he’s referenced the show in his speeches.

Cruz’s use of pop culture in his speeches also backfired in 2016 when he said that now-President Donald Trump was the model for the Back to the Future villain, Biff, in the second film.

The franchise’s screenwriter and Biff actor Thomas Wilson shut that remark down immediately and said that was absolutely inaccurate.
