It is American Idol star and Queen lead singer Adam Lambert, 41, who underwent a shocking transformation for his music video for Getting Older – a cover of Billie Eilish’s 2021 track.

Lambert, who was a finalist on American Idol in 2009 and has since forged a wildly successful career as part of Queen + Adam Lambert, is a huge fan of the Careless Whisper legend and has covered his songs in the past.

In March 2020, Lambert, who is gay, told Metro that he would like to play Michael – who died in 2016 aged 53 – should a biopic be made.

He said: ‘That’d be cool, I just feel like, we don’t know that much about him. You know, to me, it would be great to kind of explore George’s life.

‘I’d give it a go. Yeah, sign me up.’

Oxford-born James has become one of Hollywood’s hottest stars thanks to his performance as a philandering husband in the second series of the hit show about the guests and staff at a resort hotel.

The actor is favorite to play Michael in a movie that has been endorsed by the singer’s family after the success of biopics about Elton John and Queen’s Freddie Mercury.

The film, which is in the final stages of development according to insiders, will follow the singer’s career from his Wham! days to his success as a solo artist with hits such as Careless Whisper.

His drug addiction and scandals including being caught soliciting for sex in a public toilet will reportedly ‘not be glossed over’.

A source said: ‘The script is in the final stages and producers are looking for their leading man. Theo’s name is the one on everyone’s lips. He would be perfect for the part. This is George’s story, warts and all.’

Michael died in bed at his home in Goring-on-Thames, at the age of 53.

In March 2017, a senior coroner in Oxfordshire attributed Michael’s death to dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver
