Sir Bob Geldof brings rock star flavour to the Melbourne Cup

Sir Bob Geldof arrived at the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Tuesday.

The Irish musician, 73, who is currently in Australia filming for comedy movie Zombie Plane, looked dapper as he arrived at Flemington Racecourse.

The iconic rock star wore a black suit paired with a purple shirt for the surprise outing.

He went without a tie, opting for an informal yet-chic-look as he worked his angles at the event.

The Boomtown Rats rocker wore his long white hair out, in his characteristic tussled style, and rocked a distinguished beard.

Geldof was all smiles as he took off his statement sunglasses and posed for the cameras, before moving off to enjoy the festivities.

But Sir Bob wasn’t the only famous face at the Race That Stops the Nation.

Elizabeth Hurley, Samantha Armytage, Sylvia Jeffreys and Olivia Molly Rogers were among the stars at the event.

Celebrities poured into Flemington’s world-famous ‘Birdcage’ on Tuesday afternoon, where guests are treated to high-class delicacies: From free-flowing French Champagne, to speciality cocktails, and meals prepared by famed five-star chefs.

This year’s VIP attendees have also been indulging in caviar bumps – a fine dining trend which refers to eating a mound of the expensive food off the back of the hand.

According to Daily Mail insider Jana Hocking, they were the only bumps being consumed in the exclusive venue, in stark contrast to the halycon days of wild celebrity antics.

The list of famous guests are being hosted by G.H. Mumm, the official Champagne sponsor of the event, Furphy, winemakers Penfolds, Lexus and Crown Resorts.

Channel Nine also have their own marquee while Don Julio has opened a vibrant pink-themed tequila bar offering delicious speciality cocktails and live DJ performances.

Music producer Fisher, whose full name is Paul Fisher, celebrated his 38th birthday at the Birdcage’s Lexus marquee on Tuesday as he joined the guest list.

Huge crowds descended on Flemington Racecourse ahead of the 164th staging of the Melbourne Cup at 3pm.

Knight’s Choice has claimed the 2024 Melbourne Cup in a photo finish, beating Japanese raider Warp Speed by a nose.
