Sir Keir Starmer accused of ‘spending too much time abroad’ as analysis shows PM has spent 13 days out of the country since being elected

He famously said he’d rather be in Davos than Westminster.

But Sir Keir Starmer’s fondness for foreign travel since he became Prime Minister is worrying Cabinet colleagues.

A Mail on Sunday analysis shows that out of his first 100 days in No 10, 13 were spent out of the country on nine different overseas jaunts. The PM has fitted in two trips to Washington, one to New York as well as Berlin, Paris and Rome since the July 4 general election victory.

And last night, one Cabinet Minister raised fears that rows over clothes donations and ex-chief of staff Sue Gray were exacerbated by the PM being away so much.

The Minister said: ‘He’s been spending too much time abroad.

‘That’s part of the reason we haven’t been able to get to grips with Wardrobegate or the Sue Gray thing. He hasn’t been sufficiently focussed on what’s been going on at home. The attitude has been “I’m here at the UN trying to stop a war in the Middle East.

‘‘I’m not going to bother about nonsense to do with my suits or my glasses.’’’

But allies of the PM dismissed the claims, saying Sir Keir could hardly be blamed for attending major events overseas such as the NATO summit in Washington in July and the UN General Assembly in New York last month.

Speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos when he was still Opposition Leader last year, Sir Keir said he preferred being there to the ‘tribal shouting place’ that was Westminster ‘because you engage with people’.
