  • It comes after a Eurosport commentator was removed for a sexist comment

Sky Sports bosses gave Wayne Riley – the popular golf commentator – a dressing down after he made a sexist comment during live coverage of The Open.

On the back of an incident at the Olympics, which saw a Eurosport commentator sent packing for making an inappropriate remark, Mail Sport can reveal that the Australian also landed himself in hot water after a segment he presented at the gym at Royal Troon earlier this month.

Ex-pro Riley, known as ‘Radar’, had given viewers a tour of the workout facility when he was treated to a shoulder massage with a therapy gun.

After groaning with mock pleasure, the 61-year-old father-of-four, from Sydney, said: ‘I tell you what, if that could cook and clean I’d marry it.’

A couple of hours later, when Sky were showing their highlights from the morning, they saw fit to repeat the clip.

Sky declined to comment. However, it is understood that Riley, who won the Australian Open in 1991, and the production team were contacted in the aftermath of his comments. While it was accepted that no offence was intended, the group was reminded of the use of language and the need to take care with words.

In Paris, Eurosport’s veteran former BBC commentator Bob Ballard was removed from their coverage after comments he made following the gold medal victory of the Australian quartet in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

With the group making their way out of the venue, Ballard said: ‘Well, the women just finishing up. You know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make-up.’

Ballard is yet to comment on the incident.
