Smuggler caught with a ton of marijuana worth $1.2M in RV

A Phoenix man has been arrested attempting to smuggle more than a ton of marijuana with a street value of $1.2million from Mexico

US Customs and Border Protection said in a press release that the bust took place on Saturday at Arizona’s Port of Lukeville on the US-Mexico border.

According to the CBP, officers referred the 55-year-old suspect for further inspection of his motor home as he tried to cross the border into Arizona on Saturday afternoon.

After a CBP canine alerted officers to an odor it was trained to detect, they searched the camper and discovered more than 120 bundles of marijuana from the storage compartments, walls, and floor of the vehicle.

The drugs weighed almost 2,448lbs and are worth more than $1.2million.

The driver of the pot-laden RV was taken into custody and turned over to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

Both the contraband and the vehicle were confiscated by the authorities. 

CBP says this was the second largest marijuana seizure in Port of Lukeville history.
