This is the heart-stopping moment a reptile-catcher tries to grab a huge black snake but misses on his first attempt.

In the video posted to South Burnett Snake Catchers 24 / 7 can be seen working to contain the aggressive serpent.

It was one of two callouts catcher Christian Andersen attended on Tuesday but expects a surge to come as the weather warms up.

The reptile was a red-bellied black snake in Kingaroy which had crawled under wooden stump next to a letter box.

‘Imagine checking your letter box but then you look down and realising there’s a black snake curled up under a cut off stump,’ he said in a post to Facebook.

‘Well this lady called me just before regarding a black snake she saw go into a hole out the front of her yard.

‘After looking through all the leaf litter and not finding it i decided it was safe for her to mow the grass and I’d go take a quick look around to see if I could spot it anywhere.

‘I didn’t have too look far and a glimpse of black scales caught my attention under this stump.’

The snake snapped at Mr Andersen but the expert catcher said there was no reason to be concerned.

‘Usually with red bellied blacks a lot of what they do is bluff, they strike with their mouth shut,’ he told the South Burnett Times.

‘Obviously if you provoke them on enough they’ll bite.’
