Snap releases Stories sharing feature

You can now share Snapchat Stories with anyone, regardless of whether they have the app.

Parent company, Snap, has rolled out a handy new feature that lets you create a hyperlink for clips and pictures.

The feature appears when you press and hold down on certain ‘tiles’ in the Discover part of the app.

From there, you can share a link via text or email outside of the main Snapchat app.

To view these Stories outside the app, Snap is launching a desktop web viewer on Snapchat.com

At launch, the feature is limited to Official Stories, Our Stories and Search Stories.

 – Choose how you’d like to share the Story outside of Snapchat: by text, email, or by posting to other platforms. You can also copy the link.

– Recipients of this link can then view the Story you shared through a new Story player on Snapchat.com

 – At launch, the feature is limited to Official Stories, Our Stories and Search Stories.

– If you want to share your own Stories, for now you’ll just have to save them to the camera roll on your phone and send them manually.

The latest change comes after a series of improvements by the Venice, Los Angeles-based firm designed to make it more user-friendly and stay one step ahead of Facebook and Instagram.

While Facebook and Instagram have copied Snapchat’s Stories feature, neither offer support for sharing that content on other platforms.

The tool will be available immediately to Snapchatters who already have access to the new, redesigned Snapchat.

In a written statement, a spokesman for Snapchat said: ‘Since launching Our Stories in June 2014, we’ve seen the unique perspectives of Snapchatters as they share Snaps from major news events as well as everyday life in Our Stories and Search Stories.

‘With the launch of the new Story sharing feature, we’re excited that Snapchatters will now be able to share even more of those Stories with friends and family outside of Snapchat.’

There are three different types of stories that will be available to share via the app, Official Stories, Our Stories, and Search Stories.

Official Stories, are those posed by famous people and you can recognise these because a special emoji will appear next to the name of the person who posted them.

They help Snapchatters discover and identify interesting Stories more easily.

If a Snapchatter has an Official Story, their name will appear under an Official Stories header when you search for them in the Add Friends screen.

Official Stories are currently being rolled out to a small group of Snapchatters, including , including Rhianna and Hilary Clinton,

Over time, they may become more widely available.

Official Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for 24 hours.

SNAPCHAT’S LATEST REDESIGN

Snapchat was given a fresh redesign in November 2017 to make it more user-friendly.

The new app aims to separate ‘social’ and ‘media’, creating a clear distinction between interactions with friends and content from publishers and creators.

Snapchat still opens to the camera, but swiping left reveals a new ‘Friends’ page, where users see Stories from the friends they talk to the most.

Swiping right from the camera now reveals a redesigned ‘Discover’ page, where users will see Stories from publishers, creators, and the community.

The new Friends page uses machine learning to organise people based on the way you communicate with them, and will improve the more people use it, the firm says.

Our Stories relate to specific events such as music festivals and are hand curated.

They are designed make you feel like you’re at an event, festival or celebration anywhere in the world and are hand-curated or automatically created by Team Snapchat.

You can find Our Stories by swiping left to the Discover screen and tapping on the Our Story you’d like to watch, or by using search.

Our Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for 30 days.

Search Stories are another way to discover user generated Snaps on Snapchat.

Stories that appear in Search typically appear in the order of what’s relevant to you, trending, or happening nearby.

They allow you to repost images uploaded by people at events or places which interest you.

You can also search keywords in Search to see Snaps from the community.

Search Stories are algorithmically generated so you can find Stories on just about anything on Snapchat

Search Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for 30 days.
