Snapshot for day 5 of the fourth Test

AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA, DAY 5

* SCORE: South Africa 488 and 6(dec)-344, Australia 221 and 119

* MAN OF THE MOMENT: Vernon Philander. Was supposedly restricted by a sore groin on day four but claimed an astonishing 6-3 in 5.2 overs on day five as Australia crumbled.

* KEY MOMENT: The first delivery of the day, which was delivered by Philander. Shaun Marsh edged it onto his pads and the ball flew straight to Temba Bavuma at gully. The tone was set.

* STAT OF THE DAY: No Australian batsman scored a century in this series. That hasn’t happened in a four-Test series since Bill Lawry’s team lost 4-0 to South Africa in 1970.

* SUMMARY: Coach Darren Lehmann’s tenure ended on a low note. Tim Paine showed strong leadership, batting and keeping with a broken thumb in recent days, and Pat Cummins continued to impress but the visitors were smashed by 492 runs. South Africa won the series 3-1.

* QUOTE OF THE DAY: “It’s been a really challenging week … South Africa were outstanding.” – Australia captain TIM PAINE is full of praise for the hosts.
