Sneaky change to Snickers will see fans enjoying LESS chocolate in each bar after the brand decided to bring production back to Australia
- TikTok video revealed Snickers is manufactured in China turning consumers off
- Number of social media users said they will now no longer eat the chocolate bar
- Snickers is just one of many chocolate bars made by manufacturer giant Mars
- Much-loved Twix bar is made in Egypt while Maltesers blocks are made in China
The company behind Snickers has withdrawn its production factory from China and brought it back to Australia after customers said they’d boycott the chocolate – but the move has come at a cost.
Mars Wrigley Australia moved their Snickers production back to Ballarat in Victoria after the factory was closed for necessary upgrades.
The producers of Twix and Maltesers were making their nougat, caramel and peanut-heavy bar in Jiaxing city near Shanghai prior to the move back home, which displeased a number of core fans.
So news that the new Aussie-made chocolate bar will be six grams lighter than it would have been if they continued to produce it in China will come as a bittersweet pill to swallow.

While the bar will still cost $2 it will be just 44 grams a serve instead of the China-made ones, which were 50 grams.
Coles has already switched its Snickers bars to the 44 gram option, while Woolworths is using up the final 50 gram ones.
According to a statement provided by a Mars Wrigley Australia spokesperson ‘unprecedented cost pressures’ is to blame for the weight decrease.
In May 2021 a TikTok video revealing that Snickers was now made in China turned some Australians off the iconic chocolate bar.

‘Did you know your Snickers are no longer made in Australia?’ a voiceover says.

The TikTok video sparked outrage, with many Australians declaring they will no longer be buying the chocolate bar.
‘No more Snickers for me now,’ one person said.
Another person commented: ‘Never buying one of those again’.
Snickers is produced by the country’s second largest confectionary manufacturer Mars.
The confectionary giant – which also has brands including Maltesers, Twix and M&Ms – imports a number of their products from China, Egypt and as far away as the Netherlands.

A spokesperson for the company in 2020 said no local jobs had been lost as the production of Snickers was temporarily moved to a facility in Jiaxing.
The spokesperson said the company continued to support Australian made products and workers.
‘Mars Wrigley is proud of the role we play in creating regional jobs and contributing to local economies, and have a strong track record in upskilling, training and retaining our Associates (employees),’ they said.
‘We apply consistent quality standards at all our global manufacturing facilities to make sure we produce high quality products with world-class food safety and in full compliance with regulatory requirements.’
Twix bars for the Australian market are produced in Egypt – where Mars has invested $83million to build a production line in Cairo.
Maltesers and M&Ms bars – which were launched globally in 2013 and 2017 – are made in China, although the classic ball-shaped Maltesers are still made at Mars’ Ballarat facility in Victoria.
