SNL mocks Democrats for their old leaders in spoof ad

Saturday Night Live mocked the Democratic Party over its boasting about the election victories in New Jersey and Virginia this past Tuesday – even though it is still being led by an old leadership group that hasn’t brought a fresh message since its 2016 defeat to Donald Trump.

The spoof came in the form of a campaign commercial that featured senior members of the party.

It begins with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who is played by Kate McKinnon.

‘This Tuesday, Americans went to the polls,’ Pelosi says in the ad.

Next to appear in the spoof is Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is portrayed by SNL cast member Alex Moffat.

‘And they told President Trump, we don’t like what you’re doing at all, sir!’

The next to appear in the ad is Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, who is played by Cecily Strong.

‘The Dems are back!’ Pelosi says.

In Spanish, he says: ‘We’re back!’ Kaine is played by SNL cast member Mikey Day.

During the campaign last year, Kaine would often make remarks at his public rallies in Spanish.

Pelosi says: ‘You love our fresh new ideas delivered by fresh new faces like me, Nancy Pelosi.’

‘And me, Dianne Feinstein,’ the California senator says.

‘And me, Chuck Schumer,’ the senator from New York says.

The ad is mocking the Democrats since the ‘fresh new faces’ are past retirement age.

Schumer is 66 years old; Pelosi is 77 years of age; and Feinstein is 84.

‘Yo soy Tim Kaine,’ the former vice presidential nominee says.

‘And I’m team player Donna Brazile,’ who is played by Leslie Jones.

In real life, Brazile is the author of a new book, Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns that Put Donald Trump in the White House.

In the book, she says that the party functioned as an extension of Hillary Clinton’s campaign even though it claimed to be impartial during her hard-fought primary against Bernie Sanders.

Brazile was interim chairman of the Democratic National Committee during a crucial stretch of the campaign.

In the SNL spoof, the Democrats boast about ‘great new leaders waiting in the wings – hot young thing Elizabeth Warren, and also, that’s right…

‘It’s Biden time,’ says the character playing former Vice President Joe Biden.

Biden was portrayed by former regular cast member Jason Sudeikis.

Another cameo was made by last week’s SNL host, Larry David, who reprised his role as Sanders.

‘And I’m still around too,’ Sanders says.

The ad once again is a scathing commentary on the advanced age of the Democratic leadership – given that Biden is 74 years old, Sanders is 76, and Warren is 68.

The ad also mocks the Democrats’ efforts to appeal to voters outside the traditional base in the blue states.

‘Together, we’re gonna end the spirit of divisiveness in this country by focusing on how we won the governors’ races in two of the 10 states we care about,’ Feinstein says.

Pelosi chimes in again, saying: ‘And we learned our lesson from the last election. We can’t just appeal to coastal elites. We need mouth-breathers from Wisconsin.’

‘And window-lickers from Ohio as well,’ Feinstein says.

‘Mouth-breather’ is a slang term used to refer to a stupid person.

‘Window-licker’ is a derogatory term describing someone with severe learning disabilities.

‘And we know that what Americans really care about is jobs,’ Pelosi says.

‘Jobs, like smuggling immigrants across the border,’ Feinstein says.

‘And converting Confederate monuments into statues of prominent Lesbian poets,’ Pelosi says.

When Feinstein, Clinton, and Sanders yell, ‘The Dems are back!’ Brazile ends the skit by saying: ‘I will destroy all of this!’

‘And we’re really going to lace into people if they don’t say what’s politically correct – like these comics out there who think it’s okay to make jokes about concentration camps,’ Sanders says.

‘That guy should rot in hell.’

Sanders, played by David, was making a reference to David, who angered many during his opening monologue on SNL last week when he made a joke about what sexual harassment would look like in a Nazi concentration camp during the Holocaust.

The ad then reprises McKinnon’s much-loved role as Clinton.

‘Another chance for me, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Just one more chance. And maybe one more chance after that,’ McKinnon’s Hillary says.

This prompts Brazile to say: ‘I thought she was dead.’

‘We need bold leadership. And new blood,’ Schumer says.

Then Clinton appears with a mustache and is identified on screen as ‘Not Hillary.’

‘I think the Hillary idea could still work,’ Not Hillary says.

When Pelosi suggests that the Democrats will be better off once ‘Bernie [Sanders] transfers his base of passionate millennial voters over to a new leader,’ Sanders responds.

‘No. If you liked it, then you should’ve put a ring on it. Pass.,’ Sanders says, quoting a famous lyric from a song by Beyonce.
