Snoop Dogg had a pet cockroach named Gooch for six months: ‘We used to leave food out for him and everything’

Snoop Dogg once kept a cockroach as a pet for six months, naming the insect The Gooch.

The Long Beach, California native, 51, chat with the Canadian interviewer Nardwuar about the circumstances behind his adoption of the roach.

‘Gooch used to live with me,’ said the Drop It Like It’s Hot performer, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr.

The Young, Wild & Free rapper said his initial intentions were to rid his living space of the roach, but he was impressed by the insect’s will to live.

‘In my apartment, I had a roach that we couldn’t kill,’ the entertainer and marijuana advocate said. ‘We tried to kill the motherf***er when we first moved in and he wouldn’t die, so we called him The Gooch … we used to leave food out for him and everything.’

The Gin and Juice artist estimated that The Gooch was a presence in his living quarters for six months, and ‘just kept getting bigger and bigger’ under his care.

‘I stayed in that apartment for like about six, seven months – cuz grew to the size of about a whole dollar bill,’ said the rap icon, who donned a hoodie with the cover artwork of his 1993 album Doggystyle emblazoned on it.

Snoop Dogg’s interview with Nardwuar – the 11th overall, according to the interviewer – also included references to previous exchanges they had.

One included a display of custom action figures of the two by the Canadian artist Duane Shoots Toys of a 2010 exchange between them.

‘Smokefest the small version, that’s gangsta,’ Snoop said. ‘He’s a dope artist. That s*** hard as f*** cuz.’

In a past interview in 2010, Nardwuar presented Snoop with a videocassette of his 1996 live concert film Smokefest; in their recent exchange, Nardwuar told Snoop he heard that the rapper had sold the tape at a garage sale.

Snoop said that his wife Shante Broadus ‘sold the motherf***er,’ as she is wont to do.

‘She’d be all in my s***,’ he said. ‘Whenever you’re having them little yard sales and shit that’s when I’m, like, on the road. Right now they probably having one right now selling all this s*** I don’t know they selling. I just gotta act like I’m cool with it.’
