Snowfall across Europe prompt avalanches and traffic warnings

Cold weather is sweeping through Europe, with snowfalls causing everything from traffic issues to avalanches across the continent. 

Parts of Germany, including Frankfurt and Cologne, saw temperatures dip below freezing, which along with fresh snow has made for hazardous driving conditions.

Storm Gabriel swept through France overnight, prompting flights to be cancelled and official weather warnings sent out  to road users in northern parts of the country.

Public transport has been disrupted, school bus services cancelled and drivers in the greater Paris region of Ile-de-France faced ‘difficult road conditions’ today after, The Local reports. 

Six departments, Aisne, Ardennes, Aveyron, Haute-Marne, Meuse and Nord, had an orange weather warning in place this morning, however this has been downgraded to yellow this afternoon, the website stated.  

Southern Poland has also been blighted by snowy weather, where rescue teams were called out to save five people buried in an avalanche.

The avalanche occurred in the Tatra Mountains, 15 miles south of the spa town of Zakopaneon on Poland’s highest mountain, Rysy, which rises 8,212ft above sea level.

‘The condition of three people is serious. One person has already been transported to the hospital in Zakopane. Our helicopter is transporting other victims,’ rescue worker Stanislaw Krzeptowski-Sabala told private TV broadcaster TVN24.

State news agency PAP said mountain services have set the threat of avalanche in Tatra Mountains at moderate. That means avalanches could be triggered, especially on steep slopes. 

In the Spanish Pyrenees, more than 350 people had to be evacuated from a luxury spa resort over fears it could be hit by an avalanche.

The incident took place at the Panticosa spa hotel in the Pyrenees, in the northern Spanish province of Huesca in the Aragon region, as the Spanish Civil Guard evacuated staff and customers.

Local media report people in the area had noticed ‘the snow piling up on the sides of the mountain but not settling or forming an ice sheet to be able to support the snow still falling’. 

The spa hotel, known in the area for its supposedly medicinal water, was evacuated and will reportedly remain closed until Thursday.  

The snow is also causing problems on roads throughout Huesca province with the tunnels in Somport and Portalet which join Spain with France under the Pyrenees closed and authorities are using controlled explosions in order to open the tunnels again.

Only one tunnel joining Spain with France is open but vehicles need wheel chains to pass through, according to reports.

The school routes have been also blocked off and more than 150 students were unable to get to their classes this morning, according to local media.
