Sobbing vegan, 23, breaks into slaughterhouse and chains herself next to a calf and refuses to move

A 23-year-old vegan woman has posted a video of her comforting a shackled calf moments before it’s slaughtered at an abattoir.

Alix Livingstone, an animal rights activist from Melbourne, stormed the Benella slaughterhouse, located in Victoria, and chained herself to railings next to the animal.

Another activist chained themselves to a calf in a bold attempt to set it free.

Ms Livingstone tried to negotiate with the staff of the slaughterhouse for hours in a desperate bid to release two Bobby calves – but she was unsuccessful.

The calves, who were both less than 30 days old, had been removed from their mothers.

Ms Livingstone is seen sobbing in video footage while she cradles and comforts the baby cow.

According to Ms Livingstone after she had left the slaughterhouse ‘both calves were slaughtered that day.’

The abattoir told her she would be forcibly removed from the premises if she did not voluntarily leave.

The 23-year-old works for Aussie Farms as an investigator of slaughterhouses to raise awareness.

Her Facebook page Alix the Vegan says: ”I am a Melbourne based Animal Liberation Activist, working along side the animals and other dedicated activists to try and help bring to an end the exploitation of animals for food, clothing, entertainment and experimentation.’

‘My goal is to help educate and raise awareness about the ways in which we use animals by exposing people to the truth of these industries.’

Ms Livingstone’s goal isn’t always to rescue the animals but she often comforts them and sometimes takes them home.

‘I get to know them as individuals and it’s heartbreaking to know their fate if they are not going to be rescued,’ she said.

Ms Livingstone, who has been a vegan for two years, was inspired by other other activists.

‘I was inspired by other activists I saw online. I felt I needed to do more than just being vegan. I needed to join the fight for animal liberation,’ she said.

She also mentioned she was confused why people were against veganism.

‘Veganism is not causing harm to the most vulnerable creatures on the planet, showing compassion and being kind to all sentient beings.

‘I hope that those who have not yet made the connection, will soon realise that even though they are different, they share the ability to suffer, feel love and joy.’
