Soccer legend Fernando Torres made a bizarre surprise appearance at the NFL Draft, announcing a sixth-round draft pick for the Miami Dolphins.

Torres was shown on screen with the Metropolitano Stadium in the background, the home of Atletico Madrid, where he currently coaches.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool striker started talking in Spanish to begin his appearance, but transitioned back to English to announce the pick.

Torres announced former Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington as the No 194 overall selection.

The NFL did not announce exactly why Torres was chosen to read the pick, or how the Dolphins were connected to the Spaniard.

The NFL will play its first regular season game from Spain next year.

However, the game will take place at the venue Atletico Madrid’s in-city rival, Real Madrid, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

While Torres was reading the pick, Atletico Madrid’s senior team was playing Athletic Bilbao in the background.

Torres retired from soccer in 2019 as a World Cup champion. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 2012 with Chelsea.

A late Torres goal in the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona helped Chelsea advance to the final and eventually win the tournament.
