Social media trolls Madonna after she misunderstood meme

Madonna may be the queen of pop, but that doesn’t mean she has mastered the art of the meme.

The 59-year-old singer became the butt of a joke when she tried to defend her former collaborator Britney Spears while responding to a viral meme that was actually complimenting the pop star.

After the f**kjerry Instagram account posted a tweet about someone dropping a friend because they don’t think Britney’s hit song Toxic is ‘even that good,’ a confused Madge rushed to the singers defense to the delight of the internet.

‘Me: I have 9 friends. Friend: Toxic by Britney Spears isn’t even that good. Me: I have 8 friends,’ reads the meme, which is essentially stating you shouldn’t be friends with anyone who doesn’t love the song.

However, Madonna misconstrued the meaning and responded: ‘That song is [fire emoji] you are so wrong.’

The singer’s honest mistake quickly became fodder for some Twitter users who couldn’t resist poking fun at her.

‘Mom, I don’t think you get the meme @madonna…Toxic is life,’ f**kjerry wrote back.

A Twitter user named Olly joked: ‘Madonna Ciccone, queen of pop and not understanding memes.’

And Tom Drews added: ‘Still crying at Madonna omg she didn’t get the meme at all.’

Of course, Madonna wasn’t the only one who didn’t get it.

Former Real Housewives of Orange County star Heather Dubrow also commented on the meme, writing: ‘Agree @madonna.’

The Comments by Celebs Twitter account took the opportunity to tease both of them while sharing a screengrab of their comments.

‘And here we have @madonna & @heatherdubrow, representing moms who simply don’t get meme culture…’

Meanwhile, a Twitter user named Larrissa questioned what the queen of pop was doing looking at memes anyway.

‘What is Madonna doing on meme Instagram djdndjksksmd,’ she tweeted.

Others saw the singer’s fierce protection of Britney to be admirable after all of these years.

Madonna famously kissed Britney and fellow pop star Christina Aguilera while performing the song Hollywood at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.

After the unforgettable performance, Madonna and Britney immediately collaborated on the song and video Me Against the Music.

‘Madonna defending @britneyspears in a comment on insta is the only type of friendship I want. #bffgoals,’ Taylor Rai Williams wrote.
