Social services worker ‘inappropriately’ gave girl Bible

A social services worker is facing a disciplinary probe over a claim he ‘inappropriately’ gave a teenage girl a Bible, promised to pray for her and smothered her with gifts.

Jonathan Wright is said to have attached a note to the holy book, which he allegedly handed to the 16-year-old as she was leaving his care.

He also is believed to have given her other presents, with notes attached saying she was his ‘beautiful princess who I love with all my heart’.

The note read: ‘If you are ever lonely, if the world gets too cold, if you are hurting and have no-one; read this book and think of me and you will remember that I love you, because Jesus loves you.’

Jonathan Wright, an employee at Inspire Scotland, is accused of ‘inappropriately’ giving a Bible to a 16-year-old girl as she left his care

The charges against Mr Wright will be heard at the Scottish Social Services Council’s offices in Dundee on November 2 and 3.

They claim his actions amounted to an ‘inappropriate personal message’.

The full text of the note is believed to have read: ‘To my beautiful princess AA who I love with all my heart.

‘From the first day I saw your beautiful face I wished you all the happiness in the world.

‘And now you are leaving me but with this book you can take a little piece of me with you.

‘If you are ever lonely, if the world gets too cold, if you are hurting and have no-one; read this book and think of me and you will remember that I love you, because Jesus loves you.

‘I will keep praying for you every day, long after you have forgotten me. I will always love you, forever and ever, from your friend Jonny x x x.’

Mr Wright is said to have given the girl, known only as service user AA, the gift between February 23 and March 8 last year while employed as a residential child care worker by Inspire Scotland Ltd.

Based in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, Inspire Scotland was set up in 2012 and runs three residential homes, claiming to offer ‘an alternative to foster care, maximising the opportunities for close family relationships through ‘social pedagogy’.

The idea of social pedagogy is to combine education and care, while emphasising that bringing up children is the shared responsibility of their parents and the rest of society.

Mr Wright could be struck off from his job at Inspire Scotland (pictured), based in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow after he allegedly showered her with gifts calling her his 'beautiful princess' and saying he loved her

Mr Wright is also alleged to have given the girl presents of lip balm, toothpaste and earrings, adding other ‘inappropriate’ personal messages, all on gift tags signed ‘love Jonny x’, including ‘to keep your teeth white with all your smoking; ‘so you look pretty when you are out all night’; and ‘to put on your lips for your boyfriend…coz I luv him, he’s so handsome’.

It is alleged that in light of Mr Wright’s actions his fitness to practice is impaired through misconduct.

He has been notified that if the SSSC’s Fitness to Practise Panel considers the allegations to be true he will have breached its code of practice for residential child care workers and could face restrictions.

The possible outcomes of the case are that the allegation be amended, the panel may decide that not all of the allegations are proved, or that Mr Wright’s fitness to practise is not impaired and dismiss the case.
