Socialite Rose Porteous puts Perth mansion in Nedlands on the market for $5.75million

One of Australia’s most famous socialites has put her lavish Georgian mansion on the market for $5.75million.

Rose Porteous, the former wife of mining magnate Lang Hancock, and her real-estate tycoon husband William Porteous listed their neo-classical home in Perth’s affluent western suburbs last weekend.

The couple have owned the opulent residence on Dalkeith Road in the leafy suburb of Nedlands since 2019.

Previously it belonged to Ms Porteous’ daughter Joanna Lacson-Fox.

Mr Porteous, a one-time friend of Mr Hancock’s, has sold some of the grandest and most prestigious homes in Western Australia.

Ms Porteous struck up a relationship with the estate agent shortly after the death of Mr Hancock in the 17-room mansion Prix d’Amour, which the couple built together in 1990.

Ms Porteous sold the home after Mr Hancock’s passing in 1992 and later moved into her more humble residence in Nedlands.

It was Mr Hancock’s death that catapulted Ms Porteous into the limelight, as her step-daughter Gina Rinehart opened a lengthy Supreme Court battle against the socialite over her father’s estate.

Ms Rinehart claimed Ms Porteous was a demanding wife and had a role in her father’s death. Ms Porteous denied marrying Mr Hancock for his money and the coroner found Mr Hancock had died of natural causes.

Once one of the richest women in Australia, Ms Porteous became a permanent fixture in Perth’s high society, known for her individual style.

‘If anyone said to my face you’re a bitch I would just look at her and say, ‘thank you’,’ she said in a 2016 interview on A Current Affair.

‘You have to have style to be a bitch.’

Her five-bedroom Nedlands home is no less eccentric.

Who is Rose Porteous

Born Rosario Magdalena Teresita Lacson, the Filipino-born Australian rose to the top of WA’s socialite scene following her marriage to magnate Lang Hancock.

Following Hancock’s natural death Ms Porteous was engaged in a lengthy legal battle with step-daughter Gina Reinhart.

Ms Porteous remarried to Mr Hancock’s long-time friend William Porteous less than three months after the iron-ore tycoon’s death.

Ms Porteous has been reclusive in recent years, living a private life in Perth with Mr Porteous.

Mr and Ms Porteous have sold other properties in the swanky suburb, offloading a plush 1930s home nearby to Dalkeith Road for $3million in 2021.

Their current home was officially listed on Saturday on Mr Porteous’s own exclusive real estate site which lauded the palatial home for its unique neoclassical style.

‘The white pillared portico of this grand residence is an indication of the impeccable style and quality you will find throughout,’ Mr Porteous’s site read.

The home boasts a marble fireplace, parquetry floor, high ceilings and an extravagant twisting staircase.

‘With an incredible sense of flow highlighted by the feature chandelier, it is a statement of both architectural flair and master craftsmanship,’ the ad read of the statement staircase.

A ‘whisper-quiet’ elevator can save a trip between the levels for anyone avoiding the central staircase.

Resplendent open rooms feature white columns between the polished floors and moulded ceilings.

The family room spans the full width of the stately home and a northern courtyard ‘brings an abundance of light and air into the key living and entertaining areas of the home’.

French doors connect the outdoor spaces with the inside of the home.

The kitchen’s butler pantry has been advertised as an ‘indispensable advantage for a busy cook’ and for budding socialites catering to ‘large parties’.

Imported appliances from France sparkle in the ‘gleaming’ kitchen.

The galley is also reportedly fitted with hidden storage as well as lacquered cupboards and sparkling surfaces, with doors that open onto a private courtyard.

A main bedroom on the ground floor is complemented by four further bedrooms, three ensuites and a study on the upper level.
