A coffee shop has ticked off selfish laptop users for hogging tables while spending hardly anything on food and drink.

Society Café in Bath, where a cappuccino costs £2.90, put up posters asking people using their free WiFi for work to ‘be considerate’ and budge up to allow other customers to sit down.

The store’s approach was widely praised on social media, with one user describing the appeal as ‘polite and to the point’, and another calling it ‘more than reasonable’.

The poster read: ‘Hello, lovely laptop users. We love that you have chosen to come to us and do your work, but we would be really really really grateful if you could share tables.

‘Squeeze in, make friends, be considerate, and please try to remember to top up your coffee and have a sandwich or cake if you are staying a while.

‘Thanks guys, keep it sassy. Adrian and the Society Team.’

Twitter users welcomed the shop’s attempt to tackle table hogging, which infuriates many coffee lovers.

One wrote: ‘Agreed; nicely done! There’s somewhere else in Bristol which requests (very politely) that you buy a drink every hour or so. More than reasonable!’
