Son of Apex gang ‘matriarch’ ‘took part in car rampage’

A teenager accused of being part of the car accident that killed a 33-year-old motorcyclist has been identified as the son of the ‘matriarch’ of the Apex gang.

Tommy Merrall, 18, is facing several charges for his alleged role in the death of Scottish tradie Keith Stevens, who was hit and killed on November 8 in Melbourne.

Mr Merrall’s 51-year-old mother Sue reportedly allowed her property to be a safe house for members of the notorious gang, who would store their loot at her home after often violent and terrifying crime sprees.

Ms Merrall last year pleaded guilty to several charges relating to deception, handling stolen goods and dealing with proceeds of crime and perjury.

The mother-of-five appeared in Dandenong Magistrates court in February last year, charged with being ‘actively involved in fencing these items, in receiving them and providing a safe haven for the Apex gang,’ Magistrate Julie Ann O’Donnell said.

The court also heard that ‘Apex members were committing aggravated burglaries in the region and Sue was selling the items for cash’.

Ms Merrall is serving a community corrections order after spending 100 days on remand, the Herald Sun reports.

Police allege four people in a stolen BMW four-wheel drive hit Mr Stevens as he rode his motorbike through Mitcham last week.

Mr Stevens’ family called him a ‘loving father, partner and son’ in a statement.

‘Keith was our gentle giant. Born in Scotland, he called Australia home. His death is being felt by the lives he touched around the world,’ it read.

The 33-year-old died in hospital on November 9 after suffering multiple fractures and burns to 50 per cent of his body.

Police allege Ms Merrall’s son Tommy stole a BMW X5 station wagon valued at $55,000 and a Camry worth $5000 on the day Mr Stevens was run down.
