‘I say stupid things a lot’: Sophie Monk has apologised after an eyebrow-raising joke about the #MeToo movement garnered backlash from fans

‘OMG I’m so upset that a quick joke I made on Insta story has had such an effect on some people,’ she wrote.

‘I just don’t think before I speak and I say stupid things a lot.

She added: ‘I don’t want to take away from the seriousness of the movement as I am an absolute supporter especially since I was exposed to so much of it in LA. Sorry sincerely… I’m just a goose sometimes.’

The tone deaf joke was made on Friday, while the former Bardot singer prepared to make an appearance at Melbourne Fashion Festival.

She cracked the joke as two female members of her glam squad rubbed her legs with shimmer makeup prior to the GQ Menswear runway show.

The Bachelorette star was being attended to by makeup artist Karla Roccuzzo and her sister, hair stylist Gabrielle Roccuzzo.

The duo carefully applied shimmer to Sophie’s legs as she giggled and was filmed for her Instagram Story.

‘I feel a little bit violated,’ Sophie remarked. ‘Hashtag #MeToo, girls!’

Created by activist Tarana Burke, #MeToo was started to ‘encourage millions to speak out about sexual violence and harassment’, according to its official website.

The movement gained global attention after allegations of sexual assault and harassment by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein dominated headlines.

Sophie has been known to make the occasional blunder throughout her career.

She once famously mistook Bill Shorten for an actor on long-running soap Home and Away during a KIIS FM radio prank.

She also took to social media to poke fun at Channel Nine newsreaders Amber Sherlock and Julie Snook after their ‘JacketGate’ incident last year.
