Soprano singer Lesley Garrett recalls her travel adventures – and why India is her dream destination

Lesley Garrett – she loves the Dales

This week singer Lesley Garrett checks in to our holiday Q and A.

She reveals why India is her dream destination, her earliest holiday memory and her go-to Austrian ski hotel.

EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?

Staying at my great uncle’s tiny chalet at Bridlington Bay — the deal was Mum had to give the outside a new coat of paint whenever we visited!

YORKSHIRE OR LANCASHIRE?

What kind of question is that to ask someone from Doncaster? Yorkshire with a capital Y!

FAVE PART OF YORKSHIRE?

Probably the Dales where I had many happy holidays with my family in my teens.

FIRST FOREIGN TRIP?

I hitchhiked at 19 with my boyfriend at the time to Crete, and was just gobsmacked by Europe. We spent a month there living on about a fiver, which you could do in those days.

HOLIDAY HEAVEN?

Staying at the holiday cottage we own in the Forest of Grésigne, in the South of France — one of Europe’s largest oak forests. It’s just heaven on a stick.

THEATRICAL DIGS FROM HELL?

Shivering away in a freezing attic room in a guest house in Wexford, Ireland, at the start of my career.

FAVE FOREIGN HOTEL?

I love skiing and every winter my family and I stay at the family-run Hotel Auenhof in the Austrian Alps. The owners are incredibly hospitable; every time we visit we renew our friendship with them.

CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT?

My doctor husband.

MOST EMBARRASSING HOLIDAY SELFIE?

I was once asked to pose for a selfie after going out to see the Great Barrier Reef in Australia — unfortunately my face was green because I’d just been terribly seasick!

WHERE NEXT?

I’d like to return to Wexford to celebrate my 40th year in the music business. Mind you, I won’t be staying in the same house.

DREAM DESTINATION?

India — its unique mix of cultures has always fascinated me.

Cinderella, starring Lesley Garrett as the Fairy Godmother, is at New Wimbledon Theatre until January 5.
